
President Muhammadu Buhari has reminded the leadership of the Nigeria Police of the high expectations from them in providing requisite security for the 2023 General Elections. He made this statement at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, during the commissioning of Critical Operational Assets procured by the Nigeria Police Force. The President commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, for advancing the Police Reform Agenda of his administration and reminded him of the expectations.
President Buhari emphasized the importance of a competent and responsive police force in promoting democracy and the significance of the Police Reform and Re-equipping Agenda pursued by his administration. He stated that the police force is a symbol of democratic governance and rule of law, and any nation committed to deepening its democratic values must prioritize the efficiency of its police institution.
The President reiterated his promise to ensure that the police force remains impartial and apolitical during the 2023 General Elections and that the process is peaceful, secure, and reflects the free will of the citizens. He expressed satisfaction with the briefing by the Inspector General of Police during the recent meeting of the Council of State and praised the current leadership of the Nigeria Police for their commitment to police reform. The President commissioned critical operational assets that are in line with his vision for the police force.
The President charged the police to fulfill their service oaths and statutory obligation to the nation and not to disappoint. He expressed his unwavering support for the police and approved the release of funds for the recruitment exercise of 10,000 constables. The Inspector General of Police welcomed the President and stated that the critical assets being commissioned were part of a strategic plan towards stabilizing the security space before, during, and after the 2023 General Elections.
The Minister of Police Affairs informed the President that the Ministry had provided robust logistical support and an effective policy environment to complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force. The day’s event was part of the well-implemented policing strategy of the Inspector General of Police, which is built on his leadership vision that internal security can be stabilized sustainably through a well-equipped, modernized, highly resourced, and appropriately trained policing institution.
