Amidst the ongoing proceedings at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, has spoken out in response to a call made by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The APC urged the exclusion of Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate, from a potential election rerun.
During the adoption of their Final Written Address on Tuesday, August 1, Tinubu’s attorneys urged the five-man panel of Tribunal Justices to limit the rerun to only the top two vote-getters and exclude the candidate who secured the third position, i.e., Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
In reaction to this appeal, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, who is leading Peter Obi’s legal team, addressed reporters outside the courtroom. He emphasized that the APC’s appeal to the tribunal is strictly a Constitutional question that should be left to the interpretation of the Appeal Court Justices. Dr. Uzoukwu also stated that his team has put in their best efforts to secure a favorable ruling for the Labour Party.
He said, “You know that’s a constitutional matter, and we’ve talked about it enough already. So, it is for the court to decide. We offered numerous supporting arguments.
The court’s decision will stand as final. However, what really matters is that we made a strong and persuasive case”.
