Former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when his convoy was attacked by hoodlums.
According to reports, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State had provided vehicles and security personnel to escort Okorocha and his team to Imo State for the burial of the late mother of former Governor Emeka Ihedioha. This came after Okorocha had attended the burial ceremony of the wife of former Senate President Ken Nnamani in Enugu State for two days.
During the attack, which occurred around 7:00 p.m. in Ihube community along Okigwe/Enugu Expressway, one of Okorocha’s orderlies was killed, while the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and a driver were abducted by the assailants.
Confirming the assassination attempt, Okorocha spoke out yesterday at Amaimo in Ikeduru Local Council of the state during the birthday anniversary celebration of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Imo State governorship election. Okorocha expressed his anger over the incident, noting that he had been safe during his time in Enugu but was attacked and had a security personnel killed in his own state.
Okorocha stated, “I am very angry. I am angry because I spent two days in Enugu, and nothing happened to me. But it is in my own state that the convoy provided to me by the governor of Enugu State (a very good man) to attend the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother at Mbaise was attacked, and one policeman was killed. What is happening in Imo State makes me angry.”
Meanwhile, a confidential aide of the former Imo State governor revealed that the convoy’s vehicles were riddled with bullets. The two security personnel who were kidnapped were later released after being interrogated by the attackers.
